Introduction to Biomechanics
Principles of Biomechanics and Applications of Video Analysis to Human Movement
Human beings have always studied their own movement and that of other animals. Originally, the purpose of this study was probably to assess their own movement abilities in relation to the prey to catch or the predators to escape, or to find forms of movement that could give them an advantage in a life very far from today's world, without technologies or machines to reduce physical fatigue in everyday activities. At the basis of this primordial study there was undoubtedly the observation and the generic, qualitative description of movement. The concepts of Force, Acceleration, Gravity, Energy etc. as we know them today were not present except empirically, inseparably linked to practical experience of the real world.
The Main Instruments for Biomechanical Functional Assessment
What characteristics should instruments have to provide useful, real data? Which parameters are worth measuring?
The number of instruments for movement analysis is constantly growing and keeps pace with technological development. This is very positive, because it makes ever more up-to-date tools available at prices that keep falling compared with many years ago.
Photocells
Linear wire encoders
Electrogoniometers
Inertial sensors
RADAR
GPS and LPM
Optoelectronic 3D stereophotogrammetric systems

Video Analysis
Use and advantages of this method
Video analysis is certainly not a new tool in Biomechanics: it has been used for many years and today is applied in the study of human movement. With the wide spread of video as a communication device, coaches and health practitioners in general use it more and more, with many advantages:
- Immediate feedback on motor performance.
- Ability to draw and create references directly on the video.
- A striking, highly emotional visual effect for those who watch themselves back.
- Intuitiveness.
Video Analysis in various contexts
Thanks to the collaboration of over 20 authors, several types of video analysis are covered, specifying for each one the literature, the methodological aspects, the measurement of the various techniques and practical applications in the field.
Cycling
Swimming
Weight Training
Sports technique management
Injury prevention management

Biomechanics and Scientific Literature
The information in these pages will be useful to all those who, in any professional capacity — clinical, functional, performance or research — approach human movement analysis, as well as to all university students who need a teaching guide to grow in their training. Over the last 10 years of work, health and movement practitioners have increasingly asked for simple, immediately applicable information, founded on scientific bases and at the same time usable straight away "in the field", during functional assessments of athletes and sedentary people, in order to improve their performance or health. This book is the fundamental study text for all Operators Certified through the Biomechanics Professional Course and an extraordinary reference tool for all those who want to deepen their knowledge of the kinematic and dynamic analysis of human movement.

Biomechanics and Video Analysis
The aim behind the whole work is to teach the reader the kinematic analysis of human movement, the most easily understood branch of biomechanics, inviting them to explore more complex biomechanical topics in more specialised texts. Video analysis thus becomes a practical tool that can be used immediately "in the field", designed to make the practitioner's work easier by offering a form of analysis similar to "one's own eye" and therefore easy to manage. The text also contains detailed information on other types of instruments that can be used in biomechanics for more in-depth analysis.
