Application and Interpretation
An essential reference work for anthropometrists, researchers and health and sports professionals
This book, edited by Prof. Francisco Esparza-Ros and Prof. Raquel Vaquero Cristóbal PhD, gathers in a single volume the ISAK protocols for accreditation and anthropometric assessment, clearly illustrating the hierarchy of the four levels of competence and the procedures for controlling the technical error of measurement (TEM), to ensure rigour and reproducibility of data. The Italian edition is translated and edited by a team of excellence: Prof. Francesco Campa PhD, Dr Cristian Petri PhD, Dr Fabrizio Spataro, Dr Giulia Baroncini, Dr Eleonora Faraone, Dr Pasquale Musella.
Equipment needed
List of the instruments needed to perform anthropometric measurements accurately and reliably. Checking the equipment matters because you cannot take for granted that it always measures correctly: it wears with use.
- 01
Anthropometric box
It is an important material for taking reliable measurements and achieving excellent ergonomic conditions, both for the measurer and for the person being measured.
- 02
Segmometer
In the ISAK profile its use is limited to the medial acromiale-radiale and the thigh skinfold. However, it is a useful instrument especially for the thigh skinfold, since intimate areas need to be accessed.
- 03
Anthropometric tape
The anthropometric tape is used as auxiliary material to make some anthropometric marks, to measure girths and to check other anthropometric materials.
- 04
Personal scale
Personal scales measure body mass; electronic ones are recommended because they are easy to carry. Checking the scale at least once a year is essential.
- 05
Stadiometer
The stadiometer can be used to measure height and sitting height; it is recommended to fix it to the wall and place it on a hard, stable, level floor.
- 06
Instrument to measure arm span
This instrument is often used to measure specific populations in which arm span is a relevant indicator of performance.
- 07
Skinfold caliper for subcutaneous fat
The skinfold caliper is used to measure subcutaneous fat. This instrument can be made of metal, with a dial to read the measurement, or of plastic. The gold standard for checking skinfold calipers is a device combining a load cell with a separation controller.
- 08
Small sliding caliper
The small sliding caliper is used to measure small bone diameters. It also exists in plastic, is valid and reliable for measurement and only requires more maintenance. Like skinfold calipers, the small sliding caliper can be made of metal or plastic.
- 09
Large sliding caliper
The large sliding caliper is used to measure large bone diameters in the ISAK full profile. The most interesting models are those with two straight blades to measure all diameters, but which also have curved or "L"- or "C"-shaped blades to measure the anteroposterior diameter of the chest.
